    The Mistborn books are great and go by fast but I would start with one of his standalones: Elantris or Warbreaker. I actually think Warbreaker is his best work. It certainly has my favorite characters.

    As you note in your first post the review says "atrocity" not "time" or "period." Though I suppose you could consider the entire late 1970s an atrocity if you really hate disco and tube tops.
