As we did last year, we're taking a break from the regular Undercover series for Undercover Summer Break. Instead of creating a list that bands choose from, we simply ask them to come up with a summer song, and then we find them a cool location--not the traditional round room. The series will run three weeks and eight videos this year, and then we'll return you to your regularly scheduled programming. We're kicking things off with a very special episode featuring three terrific singer-songwriters in an incredible room. Perhaps you know Glen Hansard from the movie Once, from his bands The Frames and The Swell Season, or from his previous trip to the round room (covering Neutral Milk Hotel). Here, he teams up with his tourmate Lisa Hannigan and her collaborator John Smith for a gorgeous version of The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Speaking of gorgeous, we filmed this song at Chicago's Architectural Artifacts, an 80,000-square-foot store/museum/event space in the Ravenswood neighborhood. It's an incredible building filled with real-life treasures, and a beautiful backdrop for this song. Thanks to owner Stuart Grannen for having us. Enjoy.
