When we heard Mac McCaughan was going to be in Chicago—to catch a Mikal Cronin show as part of his Merge Records honcho duties—we had to ask if he’d step into the Undercover ring again. Superchunk graced us with a Cure cover during season one, and Mac was one of the subjects of our One Track Mind series as well. For this year’s Undercover: Summer Break—which will run twice a week for the next five weeks—he decided that he’d like to tackle Jonathan Richman’s “That Summer Feeling.” But it wasn’t that easy: The song is so long, Mac wanted to find someone to trade verses with him, so we tracked down Kelly Hogan—herself a veteran of last year’s Summer Break—and the two graciously agreed to board a double-decker Chicago tourist bus and play the song for us. It was bumpier than we expected, but we headed down Chicago Avenue, then down Lake Shore Drive, and eventually around the Museum Campus, which houses the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, and Solider Field. It was all very Chicago-y. Mac and Kelly even busted out an impromptu, unrehearsed cover of Nick Gilder’s “Hot Child In The City,” which we’re hoping they’ll allow us to show you at some point. Superchunk’s new album, I Hate Music, comes out August 20, and the band will play A.V. Fest/Hideout Block Party in September. Special thanks to Walt at Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co. for setting us up with the big red bus for the afternoon.
