For the next episode of our A.V. Undercover: The Day Of The Dead edition, legendary country troubadour Robbie Fulks came by the office to offer his version of Freddy Powers’ “Little Hotel Room.” A heartbreaking ballad that was also covered by Ray Charles and Merle Haggard, “Little Hotel Room” ably captures the anguish of life on the road in a nondescript room, far away from the ones you love. Powers may not be as well-known as the people he wrote songs for, but his exemplary lyric skills made him one of Fulks’ favorites. Alt-country pioneer Robbie Fulks can certainly relate to life on the road, as he is now touring to promote his latest album, Upland Stories, released on Bloodshot Records and produced by Steve Albini. Enjoy, and look for more Day Of The Dead Undercover videos—presented by El Jimador Tequila—in the coming days and weeks.
