The Melvins cover Butthole Surfers

You'll rot in the graveyard, but at least you'll have nice ice cream.

About This Episode

The ice cream-related attack you're about to witness—or maybe just witnessed—was not planned in advance, though I realize it looks perfectly staged. Yes, we had legendary noise-rock band The Melvins out in Chicago's beautiful Humboldt Park, and yes, we had the spankin' new Jeni's ice cream truck set up as the backdrop. But the audience, and Buzz Osborne's unleashing of the word "free"—that was just the beautiful hand of fate. The song they covered seemed perfectly inappropriate for the occasion: It's "Graveyard" by Butthole Surfers, and that's Surfers bassist Jeff Pinkus rocking out alongside Buzz, Dale Crover, and Coady Willis. A new Melvins album featuring original drummer Mike Dillard—Tres Cabrones—will be out in November. Enjoy this beautiful, innocent mayhem.
