Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore are still fantasizing about a Big Lebowski sequel

Still raw from John Tuttoro getting to make his Big Lebowski spin-off about a pederast bowler, The Jesus Rolls, Jeff Bridges delighted fans at a recent event with another teaser for a sequel. Speaking to a crowd of Little Lebowski Urban Achievers at a recent L.A. screening of Lebowski, Bridges reiterated that he would “absolutely” sign on to a sequel, saying, “If [the Coen brothers] called me up and said, ‘Hey let’s do it again,’ I’d say, ‘Absolutely, come on.'” Nevertheless, Bridges doesn’t “think the brothers are going to do that. I don’t think that’s their style. But I must say, they surprise us all the time.” Even if it’s never going to happen, there’s always the bong-resin-encrusted daydreams of The Dude. To wit, Bridges says he and co-star Julianne Moore “would fantasize” about making a sequel. “We did another movie together, Seventh Son, she played a witch in that movie,” he said. “And we would often say, ‘Gee, it’s all set up for a sequel.”

The Big Lebowski cast has spent decades willing a sequel into existence, and with the exception of Tutorro, who got special permission, they have all failed. In 2011, Tara Reid announced Big Lebowski 2, which she would make after American Pie 4 and The Irishman (not that Irishman). Though the Coens were excited to see that one, a rep for Reid later confirmed, “She heard Jeff Bridges say that he wanted to make Big Lebowski 2 and have all the original cast members in it, so she may have misspoke, thinking that included her based on what Jeff said.”

Two years later, the Coen brothers shut down the idea during a Cannes press conference for Inside Llewyn Davis. “John Turturro, who wants it, talks to us incessantly about doing a sequel about his (bowler) character Jesus,” said Ethan Coen. “He even has the story worked out, which he’s pitched to us a few times, but I can’t really remember it. No, I don’t see it in our future.”

“I don’t think it’s going to happen,” said Joel Coen. “I just don’t like sequels.”
