Introducing Endless Mode: A New Games & Anime Site from Paste
Big news in the 9-1-1 universe today. The series, executive produced by Ryan Murphy, has just gained another spin-off. With 9-1-1: Lone Star wrapped earlier this month, a new set of first responders will step up on 9-1-1: Nashville. According to Deadline, the idea of another spin-off has been in the works for a while, but Murphy and co. landed on Nashville as the next home base in part because the show has been offered a tax credit for filming. The newest 9-1-1 has received a straight-to-series order at ABC.
But wait, there’s more! Today we also learned that the flagship 9-1-1 show will crossover with Murphy’s other soapy network drama, Doctor Odyssey. According to Variety, the Odyssey episode—which will air Thursday, March 20—takes place during the cruise ship’s Casino Week when “unexpected guest Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) suspects two passengers are targeting the ship’s vault. Enlisting Max’s (Joshua Jackson) help, Athena raises the stakes in a dangerous game where not everyone will end up with a winning hand.” This is sure to be a big undertaking as Bassett’s character has pre-existing cruise ship trauma from her honeymoon in the seventh season, but if there’s anyone to work through trauma with, it’s Jackson’s character, who survived a near-fatal COVID-19 infection and is now living life to the fullest on the Odyssey.
This is not the first 9-1-1 crossover; the flagship show, which is set in Los Angeles, previously crossed over with Lone Star. Lone Star lasted a healthy five seasons and was canceled less because of ratings more due to logistical complications around “Disney owning 20th Television, the studio that produces the franchise, while airing the series on Fox rather than ABC,” per Variety. Meanwhile, 9-1-1 OG has been running for eight seasons. The Murphy-verse—and particularly the 9-1-1-iverse, which now includes Doctor Odyssey—is clearly thriving.
