Alex G is hitting double digits. The indie singer-songwriter just announced his 10th studio album, Headlights, due out July 18. The record also marks another major milestone. Alex G signed to RCA last year, officially marking Headlights as his major label debut. The album has been billed as a collection of “absurd twists and mundane milestones,” per Pitchfork. That’s pretty much what we’ve come to expect from him over the last nine records (plus a few Jane Schoenbrun film scores).
To celebrate, the artist released an Americana-inspired lead single, “Afterlife,” and an accompanying, Charlotte Rutherford-directed video today. Leaning into some of the same nostalgic touches that marked his last album, God Save The Animals, “Afterlife” sees Alex G reflect on his childhood over a peppy mandolin beat. “When the light came big and bright / I began another life,” he sings in the chorus. The music video also leans into a growing trend across Alex G’s contemporaries: organized dance. Julien Baker and TORRES’ “Sugar In The Tank” video was filmed at a line dancing event, and “Afterlife” begins at a neighborhood swing dance.
