Details of the film are still being kept pretty guarded, but THR reports that the film will follow the son of Stiller and Polo’s characters, who gets engaged to Grande’s character, described as “a ball-busting woman who seems all wrong for him.” The characters Grande has already played, from Victorious to Don’t Look Up and Wicked, have been defined by varying levels of ditziness, so this sounds like… not that.
Regardless, a comedy was something that has been on Grande’s radar for a while. THR reporter Borys Kit added to the news on X/Twittter, writing “Grande had been offered numerous roles from Universal, Sony & WB, passing on all of them. She even declined a comedy that would have given her the power to pick her co-star. One thing was clear, however: she was intent on finding a comedy.” Grande’s Wicked co-stars also praised her skills often during their longest press tour of all time. Bowen Yang told Interview Magazine last November that he came up with the idea for the “Game Night” sketch during her Saturday Night Live hosting gig last year, calling her “very precise in terms of her timing and delivery.” Similarly, fellow co-star (and current romantic partner) Ethan Slater told GQ last year, “My unbiased opinion is that she’s one of the best comedians that’s been in a movie in a long time. She’s a genius.” Sounds like Robert De Niro might agree!
