They want “slightly more malleable people who are earlier in their career, who perhaps are going to use it as a stepping stone, and who are more controllable by the studio.” The American Beauty director doesn’t count himself among these and, likewise, doesn’t anticipate a call from the Broccolis to return to the series.
Martin Scorsese has “no intention of retiring” after Sinatra, Jesus delays

Scorsese told the press conference at the Cinema Museum in Torino, Italy, where he accepted the Premio Della Mole Award, that he has “no intention of retiring.” The director also updated the press on the projects, saying that “Frank Sinatra is only postponed” and “the one about Jesus, I am working on. I hope God gives me the strength and money to finish them.”
