Bad Bunny is officially a leading man

Even if February had stopped a week ago, Bad Bunny would have already had one of the best months someone could possibly have. The month began with him winning the Grammy for Album of the Year for DeBí TiRAR MáS FOToS, which became the first Spanish-language album to win the award. Then, he performed an acclaimed and highly-viewed set at halftime of Super Bowl LX. Now, he’s set his first role as the lead of a feature film. Will Bad Bunny weep, when there are no worlds left to conquer?

That’s a problem for the future. For now, Variety reports that Bad Bunny will lead Porto Rico, a new historical “epic Caribbean western” about Puerto Rico’s origins from director René Pérez Joglar. Pérez Joglar, a fellow Grammy-winning Puerto Rican musician, is perhaps more recognizable by his stage name Residente. Edward Norton, Javier Bardem, and Viggo Mortensen will also star in the movie. Says Norton in a press statement, “This film sits in a tradition of films we deeply love, from The Godfather to Gangs of New York, that both thrill us with visceral drama and iconic characters and eras while also forcing us to face up to the shadow story under the American narrative of idealism.” Says Pérez Joglar, “I have dreamed of making a film about my country since I was a child. Puerto Rico’s true history has always been surrounded by controversy.”

Bad Bunny has appeared in a handful of features in supporting roles since 2019, most recently in 2025’s Caught Stealing, from director Darren Aronofsky, and Happy Gilmore 2. He also made his Saturday Night Live hosting debut last fall, kicking off the show’s 51st season.
