As J.J. Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot is probably best known for its involvement in his high-minded, lens flare-packed sci-fi stories, but the studio actually does do other things. A few years ago, we reported that it was developing a project about Martin Luther King Jr., and now Deadline says Bad Robot is set to produce a half-hour dramedy series based on the life of RuPaul.
The show will tell a “fictionalized version” of RuPaul’s rise from “club kid to drag queen, gay icon, and global star,” and it will be set in New York City during the ‘80s. The untitled series is being written by Gary Lennon, who previously worked on Power, Orange Is The New Black, and Justified, and Deadline says it will be “taken to the marketplace shortly.” That means a network (or streaming service or whatever) hasn’t signed on yet, but considering the combined star power of RuPaul and J.J. Abrams, it seems safe to assume that somebody out there will be interested.
