Big-eyed robo-teens kick ass in the latest Alita: Battle Angel trailer
Previous trailers for Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel—the Desperado mastermind’s first full directorial outing since 2014's Sin City: A Dame To Kill For—have emphasized the human side of its titular anime robot girl’s troubles, showing her fighting with father figure Christoph Waltz and angsting about her general artificiality. Today, though, 20th Century Fox released a trailer that emphasizes the Battle part of Battle: Angel, making it clear that, big-eyed android sadness aside, this is still going to be a big, flashy Robert Rodriguez movie about CGI badasses kicking the shit out of each other.
And honestly, that all sounds pretty awesome to us; it’s not clear how much of the film will be made up of cyborg grudge matches, but from what’s on display here, it looks like Rodriguez hasn’t lost his knack for big action setpieces. Sure, there’s still some cute teenage flirting stuff, but the meat of the trailer is watching “the most advanced weapon ever” (Rose Salazar, doing voice and mo-cap) kicking beer bottles into assholes’ faces and slicing robots in half, and we’re absolutely here for that.
Alita: Battle Angel slams its way into theaters on February 14, 2019.
