Despite dinos and cute animated pups, the top dog at the U.S. box office remains Spider-Man. Now in its third week of release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day spun webs around its competition at the U.S. box office, spinning an additional $70 million to Sony Pictures’ coffers. According to Variety, the latest Peter Parker adventure also celebrated its $2 billion dollar milestone, a rare feat for a movie to achieve in just three weeks. So far, Tom Holland’s latest effort grossed $785 million at home and an additional $1.23 billion abroad, with no signs of slowing down. Spider-Man: Brand New Day joins an elite club of movies like Avatar, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Titanic in the $2 billion club. It’s the second-fastest film to hit the $2 billion mark, after Avengers: Endgame.
Still out on the high seas, The Odyssey has maintained its course, bringing in another $23.2 million in its fifth week. The Universal Pictures juggernaunt just opened in China with almost almost $40 million, bringing its total gross $1.29 billion so far and further cementing its place as Christopher Nolan’s top-grossing film and the second-highest grossing film of the year so far.
In addition to Spider-Man and Odysseus, there were two dino-themed newcomers to the top of the box office. David Robert Mitchell’s time-traveling family adventure movie The End Of Oak Street scared up $21 million for a combined global total gross of $46 million. The latest PAW Patrol sequel, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, offered family-friendly prehistoric fare for all-ages. It earned $20.5 million in its first weekend, for a combined total of $69 million with the global ticket sales factored in.
Two music films held the middle of the pack, with Katseye: Wild Hearts and Six: The Musical Live! bringing in the fans. The documentary Katseye: Wild Hearts followed the global girl group on tour and earned $3.8 million in theaters. Six: The Musical Live! earned a royal sum of $3 million. The filmed version of the popular musical follows in the wake of another successful Broadway live tape, Hadestown, which has earned $20 million since its July debut.
Angel Studios’ period drama The Brink Of War debuted at the seventh spot with $2.6 million. The Pixar sequel Toy Story 5 held on to the eighth spot with an additional $2.3 million to a total of $1.1 billion worldwide gross. One Night Only tumbled down from the third spot to number nine this week with $2 million at the box office. Closing out the top ten is another debut, the Tamil language romantic sports drama Vishwanath And Sons, with $1.6 million. Other notable debuts this weekend included the Kristen Stewart stoner comedy The Wrong Girls, which earned a little over $400,000; Union County earned $68,000 on only ten screens; and American Doctor, which made just over $40,000 on just one screen.
