One of the nice things about having an Oscar-nominated director on speed dial—we assume, although if anybody has Brady Corbert’s number, hit us up—is that, if you suddenly find yourself in dire need of some crack directing on a project on short notice, you don’t have to reach very far to get someone. Case in point: News (via Puck) that Margot Robbie’s long-planned Ocean’s Eleven prequel—which lost its director earlier this month, when it was revealed that Minari‘s Lee Isaac Chung had departed the project in a puff of creative differences—might just do the easiest thing, and tap an already-attached Bradley Cooper to write and direct the dang thing himself.
Cooper has been attached to the project since it first started getting floated around, albeit only in an acting capacity. But, hey, why not? He’s got three films under his belt already, all pretty warmly received. (Most recently, his Will Arnett/Laura Dern dramedy Is This Thing On?, which, like all of his films, he co-starred in.) Sure, you could make the point that there’s nothing in A Star Is Born or Maestro to suggest that Cooper’s got a Steven Soderberghian head for intricate heists lurking under his movie star looks, but he does have a certain flair for style that makes it easy to imagine him navigating a crew of good-looking people around 1960s Las Vegas, executing their convoluted crimes.
Details about the Ocean‘s prequel are pretty light, as it’s been slowly bubbling up almost entirely out of Warner Bros.’ strong determination to get this particular brand back into movie theaters at some dang point. (They’re also, as it happens, reportedly poking around at the idea of an Ocean’s Fourteen that would reunite George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, and the rest of the previous crew, along with their new heisting pal, The Cruel And Unstoppable Ravages Of Time. David Leitch is attached to direct that one.)
