Breaking Bad and True Detective lead TCA Awards’ nominations
The Television Critics Association (which has a new logo they’d like you to pay attention to) has released the nominees for their 2014 awards—all chosen by television critics, including the three TV editors of The A.V. Club. Naturally, as the nominees reflect consensus, the list of nominees isn’t too surprising. Breaking Bad and True Detective are immediate frontrunners—scoring acting nominations for leads Bryan Cranston and Matthew McConaughey, as well as nominations for achievements in drama and miniseries, respectively, and the organization’s top award, the program of the year.
Mad Men, meanwhile, was shut out entirely—which might be due to when the ballots were due (about 10 days ago, which was before the first part of the show’s seventh season ended).
Other notable nominees include Orange Is The New Black, which is up both for best new program and program of the year, and The Americans, which was recognized for Matthew Rhys’ acting and for outstanding achievement in drama. And Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time is recognized for outstanding achievement in youth programming. Frequent nominees The Good Wife and Game Of Thrones round out the program of the year category.
In addition to nominations for programming, the TCA awards a career achievement prize. Nominees this year include Jay Leno, William Shatner, and Valerie Harper.
