Shemar Moore's cop show previously survived two different cancellations, but it sounds like this last one will stick.

After two failed attempts, CBS finally manages to murder S.W.A.T.

CBS has finally managed to kill off S.W.A.T., TV’s least-killable show. News that the Shemar Moore-starring police series would be ending with its eighth season comes not long after news that the Shemar Moore-starring police series would be ending after its seventh season, which came not long after news that the Shemar Moore-starring police series would be ending with its sixth season. It’s really dead this time, though, an assertion we believe wholeheartedly even though we’ve seen a lot of fucking horror movies at this point, and should presumably know better.

Per Deadline, the previous two attempts to end the series—one an outright cancellation, and one that came after season 7 had initially been announced as a “final season”—got rolled back after some pretty tricky financial negotiations between producers Sony Pictures Television and CBS. This time, though, CBS didn’t even come to the table, possibly because Sony employs hypnotists in order to keep its procedurals on the air, and you can only fall for that trick so many times.

Series showrunner Andrew Dettman confirmed the news (according to THR), stating that, “It’s heartbreaking news, primarily because it’s been such an immense pleasure working with this cast and crew to put out a show that we’ve always been proud of. They are truly an extraordinary group of people who have all worked so hard and have been so dedicated for all these eight seasons, overcoming countless challenges. I can’t give them enough credit.”

S.W.A.T., in its final configuration, starred Moore—who between this, Criminal Minds, and The Young And The Restless, recently hit thirty years of near-consecutive employment at CBS—plus Jay “Oh, that’s what Ted from Better Off Ted has been up to” Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Anna Enger Ritch, Niko Pepaj, and Annie Ilonzeh. The series is currently in the midst of airing what will be—god willing, the creek don’t rise, and Mesmo The Confounding gets kept away from decision-makers at CBS—its final season, with the finale set to air on May 16.
