Rumors abounded after Jonathan Majors was expelled from the Marvel Cinematic Universe that the studio was courting other actors to play the role of Kang the Conqueror—specifically, Oscar nominee Colman Domingo. It turns out those rumors were not precisely accurate. “When it was constantly in the press and on places like Twitter, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Is this true? Am I being talked about for Kang?'” Domingo said in a new episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Variety). “I literally called up my team and said, ‘Are you guys having conversations that I have no idea about?’ And they said no. ‘Are you guys being cagey or what?’ They weren’t.”
Domingo did discuss the role with Marvel Studios, but only because he was generally discussing possible roles with Marvel Studios. “There had been conversations of me coming into Marvel in some way, so we did follow-up with a sit-down meeting with the heads of Marvel. I did do that. We talked openly about the landscape of Marvel and the Kang rumors,” he explained. Domingo stepping in to replace Majors was never really a conversation, he said, but he wouldn’t have wanted to do that anyway: “I am all about energy. I want to do things that make sense and bring gentle energy. I want a role to be mine, whatever I develop. Something didn’t feel right to me about replacing someone. I want to build something from the ground up that is my own.”
In the end, Marvel decided to drop the whole Kang Dynasty thing and pivot to Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, anyway. (Majors, who was convicted in relation to a domestic violence dispute, professed himself “heartbroken” about the situation, telling TMZ, “I love Kang.”) Domingo, however, is still available for future Marvel consideration. “I want to build something from the ground up, so there still are talks,” he said.
