Darren Aronofsky forgoes tacky numbers on his Wolverine sequel (which is also not a sequel)

Making good on Hugh Jackman’s promises that the Darren Aronofsky-directed Wolverine film would be “out of the box,” Aronofsky himself offered some details on the sequel-that-is-not-a-sequel in an interview with Hitfix, emphasizing that it would be a “one-off” and “not a sequel in any conventional sense.” In keeping with that, he’s going with the title The Wolverine—no tacky numbers, with a classy definite article and everything. It’s not just out of the box. It is the box. A whole other box, separate from the rest of those boxes.

As has been long rumored, The Wolverine will take place largely in Japan, and follow his romance with Mariko Yashida, betrothed daughter of a Japanese crime lord, which goes about as well as you’d expect from romancing the betrothed daughter of a Japanese crime lord—namely, lots of samurai fighting with the would-be in-laws and plenty of moral hand-wringing. Aronofsky’s frequent cinematographer Matty Libatique is also on board, while Christopher McQuarrie, as previously reported, will handle the script, which will take its cues from the four-issue Chris Claremont/Frank Miller miniseries from 1982.
