David Koepp says Steven Spielberg's new movie has finished shooting

Screenwriter David Koepp is sworn to secrecy under the punishment of death, but he did give a small update on the new Steven Spielberg movie.

David Koepp says Steven Spielberg's new movie has finished shooting

Since completing his long-awaited sideways bio-drama, The Fabelmans, director Steven Spielberg took an uncharacteristic break. The four-year period between Fabelmans and Untitled Science Fiction Film is the filmmaker’s longest since the four years between Schindler’s List and The Lost World—and he released four movies between 1993 and 1997. But audiences won’t have to wait much longer, according to screenwriter David Koepp. Speaking to Deadline at the premiere of Jurassic World Rebirth, Koepp said that the film finished shooting a few weeks ago and “looks fantastic.”

“Unfortunately, there’s very little I can say about it other than that we finished shooting about three weeks ago,” Koepp said. “I think it looks fantastic and it comes out next June.”

Under the threat of death, Koepp couldn’t say much about the film, so while Deadline prodded him for details, asking if it was like E.T., Koepp kept his lips sealed. However, he did give his impressions of the movie. “I say anything, I get killed,” Koepp said, revealing the extreme punishments of the Amblin organization. “What he does so brilliantly is that he combines a vast spectacle with really honest, human emotion, unlike, I think, any other director. It’s a very emotional experience, this movie.”

Koepp also said Spielberg “was the most involved on this as he’s been on any movie I’ve written for him to direct.” Spielberg wrote the story treatment for the film, a rarity in Spielberg land. According to Koepp, the director wrote a 50-page treatment for the screenwriter to provide notes and feedback. Spielberg only has writing credits on a handful of his movies, including Close Encounters, A.I., and Fabelmans.
