Disney and Lego are going to retell the Star Wars movies from the droids’ perspectives
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the unsung heroes of the Star Wars saga will finally be getting a chance to tell their side of the story in a new Disney XD limited series. No, not Max Rebo and Sy Snootles (Disney will probably save that for one of the spinoff movies), but R2-D2 and C-3PO, the lovable pair of droids that somehow managed to save the galaxy a dozen times, even though they can’t stop bickering with each other for five minutes. The series will be animated (though that probably means computer-generated), and it will somehow retell the story of all six Star Wars movies—from the droids’ perspectives—in five 22-minute episodes. Plus, everybody will be made of Lego, because everything is better when it’s made of Lego.
THR says the idea is that R2 and 3PO are regaling a bunch of celebrating Rebels in the wake of the Battle Of Endor with stories of their adventures, starting—as all Star Wars stories do—on Tatooine, where the two droids first meet (as depicted in the the classic film The Phantom Menace). What THR doesn’t say, however, is how C-3PO could possibly tell anyone stories about what happened to him in the prequels. As everyone surely remembers, he got his memory erased at the end of Revenge Of The Sith in order to explain why he didn’t bother telling anyone he was built by Darth Vader in the original movies. Either they’re completely destroying the canonical events of the movies—which happens a lot in Star Wars stuff anyway—or the first three movies will have to be retold using R2’s bloops and bleeps in this series. That might make for terrible television, but at least it will be accurate.
As of right now, it’s unclear if the series will also cover the adventures that R2 and 3PO had in the old Star Wars: Droids cartoon, but we’re going to assume that it will absolutely not acknowledge that show’s existence at all. We’ll find out for sure, though, when this special Lego droids series airs on Disney XD later this year.
