Disney picks up the rights to “female Indiana Jones” graphic novel series

Despite all of the ancient warnings not to do so, Disney is intent on opening the proverbial ark and unleashing a fifth Indiana Jones movie that will melt all of our faces and/or make our heads explode. While that’s in the works, though, Disney will also be developing a movie based on Tony Cliff’s Delilah Dirk graphic novel series, which stars a character that Deadline describes as “a female Indiana Jones.” The stories are set in the early 19th century, and Delilah herself is apparently an expert sword-fighter who “battles pirates and escapes on her flying boat while seeking adventures around the globe.” This movie will adapt the first Delilah book, which sees her escaping from a prison in Turkey and teaming up with “a mild-mannered officer named Selim who becomes her sidekick.”

Deadline says the adaptation will be a live-action film, so Disney will probably set it up to be a desperately needed big budget, female-led action franchise.
