“I just hope it’s a way better show, and more cohesive,” he said at a for-your-consideration screening in New York last night, part of FX’s efforts to add some Emmys to the show’s growing collection. As reported by Variety, Glover expressed that he’s touched by the way viewers took to the show in its first season, but he wants to exceed that with the next round of episodes. “I want you to be able to watch the first season and be like ‘Wow, I like that season, but the second one is way better.’ I want that debate happening.”
Of course, Atlanta stood out last fall because it was not married to cohesion, and willing to go on episode-long detours like “B.A.N.” (in which Atlanta became a sketch show for a week, presenting a half-hour broadcast from a fictional BET-like network, complete with commercial parodies) or the Zazie Beetz spotlight “Value.” What kept it all connected was a rock-solid perspective, the sense that Glover and team knew this place, these characters, these stories, and had found the ideal vehicle in which to present them to the world. Glover spoke to this as well, mentioning how Atlanta differed from the many, many other series filmed in the eponymous city—sounding a bit like his old boss Dan Harmon in the process.
“All stories are the same. You want to watch the hero go through the journey, but nobody had the perspective we had,” he said. “As much as it seems like everything’s been done, it’s just really about how you decorate it.”
Atlanta is set to return to FX in 2018, after Glover finishes his adventures with a young, slimy, double-crossing, no-good swindler.
