Brian Tyree Henry isn’t making his mother, Kate Mulgrew, proud in the trailer for Apple TV+’s Dope Thief. And why would he? No mother wants their son growing up to be a dope thief. It’s like hearing that your child dreams of becoming an influencer—not what any parent wants to hear. On the show, Henry, along with Narcos’ Wagner Moura, poses as a DEA agent to rob drug dealers. It’s not exactly the type of thing that endears you to dear mom, but that’s one of the predicaments explored in the new eight-episode series Dope Thief. Executive produced by Ridley Scott, who directs the first episode, and created by The Town scribe Peter Craig, the series has an impressive cast, including Mulgrew, Marin Ireland, and Ving Rhames for some Philly-based drug running and all the highs and lows within.

Here’s the synopsis:

Based on Dennis Tafoya’s book of the same name, the series follows long-time Philly friends and delinquents who pose as DEA agents to rob an unknown house in the countryside, only to have their small-time grift become a life-and-death enterprise, as they unwittingly reveal and unravel the biggest hidden narcotics corridor on the Eastern seaboard.

The show ranked among The A.V. Club’s most anticipated of 2025. With the clarification that Kate Mulgrew is playing Henry’s concerned mother, we’re happy to report that we’re still excited to see Dope Thief. The first two episodes of Dope Thieves stream on Apple TV+ on Friday, March 14, with new episodes every Friday through April 25.
