A couple of heartfelt, artful domestic dramas—one old, one new—are worthy of attention on this list. Criterion’s releasing Ken Loach’s 1969 classic Kes, about a much-bullied boy who finds himself through falconry; and John Cameron Mitchell’s restrained adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire’s play Rabbit Hole features one of Nicole Kidman’s best performances, as a woman who doesn’t know how to relate to the world after her son dies. But the main event this week is The Ernie Kovacs Collection, a six-DVD set collecting ten years’ worth of the comedian’s various sketches, improvs and elaborately surreal visual gags.
