English Teacher, created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, has been renewed for a second season at FX. “English Teacher was one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024 and we are grateful to the producers, writers, cast, directors and crew for the show’s creative excellence,” FX Entertainment president Nick Grad said in a statement. “We look forward to the new season.” The series is slated to return later this year.

The comedy stars Alvarez as Evan Marquez, a put-upon high school teacher whose job is put at risk because of his gay relationship with another (former) teacher. He’s forced to navigate the culture wars and the unique challenges facing both teachers and students in the current political climate. Luckily, he’s surrounded by a cast of quirky and lovable teachers played by Stephanie Koenig, Sean Patton, and Carmen Christopher, as well as his sometimes-mentor, sometimes-antagonist Principal Grant Moretti, played by Enrico Colantoni. In his B review of the series, The A.V. Club‘s Tim Lowery described the show “as having the friend-confessional, talky spirit of Superbad—like that movie, this show also gets raunchy and has plenty of student-drawn penises—only from the teachers’ perspective.”

The series’ early critical success made it a shoo-in for a renewal, but that momentum was interrupted when Alvarez was accused of sexual assault by a former collaborator. (In a statement from his representatives, Alvarez claimed his encounters with the accuser were consensual.) Despite a lengthy profile on the incident from Vulture in December, the first season nevertheless picked up nominations for the Critics Choice Television Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards. The writer-performer, who has also gained a following for his comic characters on TikTok, recently appeared on an episode of Celebrity Jeopardy!, so the controversy doesn’t seem to have much affected his ascendance—as this renewal indicates.
