“Best American Story” is a wonderful fuck-you to anyone who doesn’t think the country’s “best” stories are its most diverse, honoring Black-ish, Fresh Off The Boat, Jane The Virgin, Moonlight, and Transparent. Meanwhile, “Best Fight Against The System” replaces the generic “Best Fight” with nominees that aren’t contingent on physical combat including Get Out, Hidden Figures, Loving, Luke Cage, and Mr. Robot. Other additions celebrate various aspects of television like “Best Host” and “Best Reality Competition,” while ”Tearjerker” seems specifically designed to give This Is Us a trophy.
You can see the full list of nominees via MTV News, but there are some points of note. Get Out and Stranger Things scored the most nominations of any film and series, respectively. Also: Moonlight and La La Land, both of which received statues on Oscar night, are up for Best Kiss—competing, mind you, against a smooch from Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates—but are not in the running for Movie Of The Year.
