The GOP takes a university hostage in exclusive First They Came For My College trailer

The complaints about “woke” ideology existed before the second inauguration of Donald Trump. Take New College of Florida, for example, which is the subject of the new documentary First They Came For My College. In January 2023, Governor Ron Desantis replaced the school’s board of trustees with conservative campaigners. First They Came For My College follows the chaos and resistance that follows.

The A.V. Club can exclusively debut the first trailer for the documentary, which opens later this month at SXSW. “Raise your hand if you have ever experienced a Christo-fascist takeover of your college,” one student says near the beginning of the trailer. Hopefully that doesn’t apply to many people watching; it looks like quite a miserable experience, especially if you’re simply a college student trying to get an education and not trying to play politics. Says one professor, “We’re in an environment that is hostile to us. I’ve been doing this for 29 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this.” Still, where there is resistance there is hope, and the clip makes clear. Art and friendship still may have a shot at defying tyranny yet.

First The Came From My College comes from director Patrick Bresnan and will premiere tomorrow at True/False Film Festival in Columbia, MO tomorrow. It will then open at SXSW on March 12 at Alamo Lamar, and screen again on March 13 and March 18. You can take a look at ticketing info for the doc here
