FX orders its What We Do In The Shadows TV remake to series

Good news for fans of flat-based bloodsucking comedy today, as FX announced that it’s finally moved forward with a series order for Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s U.S. TV version of their cult mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows. The network has issued a 10-episode first season-order for the series, which will be written by Clement and directed by Waititi (who both starred in the original film), with a new cast of aimless slacker vampires filling its central roles.

The cast list suggests the series will see a pretty significant reshuffling of the film’s “vampires make for crappy roommates” premise, including the addition of a “badass female vampire,” played by British stand-up Natasia Demetriou, to the movie’s largely male-focused antics. Demetriou will be joined by Kayvan Novak (Four Lions) and Matt Berry, probably the best known of the bunch for his work on British comedies like The IT Crowd, Snuff Box, and Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. (Despite being set in New York City, the only American performer listed is The Magicians’ Harvey Guillen, possibly because, unlike the rest of the cast, he’s playing a character who’s technically still alive.)

Clement currently co-stars on one of FX’s most-talked-about series, Legion, while Waititi is continuing to enjoy the buzz around his recent contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Ragnarok. What We Do In The Shadows is expected to debut on the network sometime next spring.
