FX picks up new "money ruins people" series from Better Call Saul showrunner Peter Gould

The Better Call Saul co-creator has just sold FX on Disinherited, about a pair of sisters who suddenly inherit a big pile of money/problems.

FX picks up new

Peter Gould has spent most of the more critically lauded portions of his career working within what those inclined to auteur-ism might term “The Vince Gilligan Ecosystem”—gaining acclaim as a writer and then a producer on Breaking Bad, before serving as co-creator and eventually sole showrunner for its excellent spin-off Better Call Saul. (A pretty long way to go from his first official Hollywood credit, co-writing the screenplay for the utterly ridiculous 1994 Double Dragon movie.) Now, though, Gould (who recently was credited as a consulting producer on Gilligan’s Pluribus) is striking out on his own, as FX announced that it’s picking up his new TV pilot, Disinherited, to series.

Starring You‘s Victoria Pedretti and Kiera Allen (from 2020 Sarah Paulson thriller Run), the show centers on the duo as a pair of “scrappy sisters” who end up in a world of rich assholes and entitlement after receiving an unexpected inheritance. (The show comes by its “rich jerk TV” pedigree honest, by the way; Succession‘s Alan Ruck starred in the pilot, alongside Karl Glusman, Katja Herbers, Eddie Marsan, and Jonathan Higginbotham.) Gould, who got his TV directing start with a series of Breaking Bad webisodes before directing episodes of both that series and Saul, directed the pilot, which is also being produced by Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, and Nena Rodrigue, through Johnson and Bergman’s T-Street production company.

Honestly, we’re here for it: Gould comes into this with a lot of hard-earned goodwill for Better Call Saul, which managed the unenviable trick of feeling like a distinct series from its parent show while still feeling of a piece with its command of both darkness and humor. Seeing him tackle a new show about the terrible things that money, and the desire for it, do to the human brain feels like a perfectly natural fit.

No word yet on when Disinherited is expected to premiere on FX and Hulu, or which of the non-Pedretti and Allen stars from the pilot might return for the full series.
