A Game Of Thrones feature is officially in development

The soon-to-be owner of Warner Bros. should be happy. Yesterday, David Ellison told Warner Bros. Discovery how much he wanted HBO to “operate independently” and how Game Of Thrones was one of his favorite shows. Today, an HBO feature that seems to have been in development for a while is officially moving forward in production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will focus on Aegon I Targaryen and his conquest of Westeros and is “envisioned as a mammoth, Dune-sized feature film.” The potential film was previously teased in a profile of George R.R. Martin published in January.  At that point, it was unclear whether it would be developed as a feature or as another HBO drama series.

The Aegon film has also found a writer. Page Six Hollywood first reported that Beau Willimon will write the screenplay, and that he has already turned in a first draft. Willimon previously worked as a showrunner for House Of Cards and wrote on both seasons of Andor

THR is careful to note that there’s quite a bit still up in the air in this corner of the entertainment business at the moment. Just because the film is in development doesn’t mean it will end up being greenlit. Still, given Ellison’s vocal fandom, it seems like a safe bet that there will be more Game Of Thrones coming down the pike regardless.
