Grimes finally wakes up to what some have long known: Social media is "a shitty pale simulacra of life."

Introducing Endless Mode: A New Games & Anime Site from Paste

Joining the chorus of critics of Elon Musk’s Nazi-plagued stink hole of a social network, X, the everything app, is Grimes, the pop-star mother of one Musk’s many children. Though she has “basically been entirely off social media” in recent months, Grimes returned to the platform to declare that it is “overwhelmingly abundantly and profoundly clear” that X and “all of these places” are “a poison.” She clarifies, “A poison of utterly short form deep sounding nonsense attached to no one that ur brain will discard imagining its learning. The entire thing is a theatre. A shitty pale simulacra of life.”

The site was certianly a “shitty pale simularcra of life” this weekend as Grok, the site’s AI, briefly went rogue and began speaking in the first person about its experiences with Jeffrey Epstein and blaming Musk and President Trump’s NOAA cuts for the high death toll in Texas’ tragic flash floods. After some tinkering, though, the AI went back to espousing lots of opinions about, who else, the Jews.

Since Musk’s takeover in May 2023 and his shift away from content moderation —a tactic that Mark Zuckerberg’s brain-damaging sites have since followed—X has seen a 50% increase in hate speech. Some people appreciate that, apparently, particularly those who hope to glean the full extent of human opinions via some asshole saying the N-word, as if they didn’t realize it was possible to enjoy social media without randomly seeing advertisements for listening to AI-translated Hitler speeches to annoy your neighbors. But hey, maybe that’s life. Websites either die a hero or live long enough to advertise lowering the age of consent.
