Haley Joel Osment apologizes for using slur during arrest

Earlier this month, Sixth Sense actor Haley Joel Osment was arrested at a ski lodge in Mammoth Lakes, California for alleged substance possession and public intoxication. Over the past few days, videos from the incident have surfaced on TMZ and been reported by People. Last night, the former reported that body cam footage depicts Osment calling the arresting officer a “Nazi” and using an epithet for Jewish people. Today, he’s offering an apology for the situation.

“I’m absolutely horrified by my behavior. Had I known I used this disgraceful language in the throes of a blackout, I would have spoken up sooner. The past few months of loss and displacement have broken me down to a very low emotional place,” the actor shared in a statement to People, which reports that Osment lost his home in the Los Angeles County fires earlier this year. “But that’s no excuse for using this disgusting word. From the bottom of my heart, I apologize to absolutely everyone that this hurts. What came out of my mouth was nonsensical garbage – I’ve let the Jewish community down and it devastates me. I don’t ask for anyone’s forgiveness, but I promise to atone for my terrible mistake.”

The magazine reports that Osment was charged yesterday with possession of cocaine and disorderly conduct. The body cam footage reviewed by People shows a witness describing that after Osment was cut off at the lodge bar, he became “argumentative” and tried to board a ski lift. Employees stopped him and called the police. When asked his name during the arrest, Osment responded, “I’m an American.”

TMZ reports that after losing everything in the Altadena fire, Osment has been battling his insurance company, which reportedly denied his claim for a replacement home. The actor has had scattered legal issues in the past. In 2006, Osment was sentenced to three years of probation after he was charged with misdemeanor drunk driving. In 2018, police were called over a “verbal scuffle” at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, per People.
