Dean DeBlois, who wrote and directed all three of the original animated movies as well as this year’s remake, will return for the 2027 movie. He’ll bring his live-action Hiccup, Mason Thames, and Ingrid, Nico Parker, along with him. Universal also screened the first live-action remake for the fans at CinemaCon today, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The animated How To Train Your Dragon 2 introduced a number of new characters into the world of Berk. Hiccup’s long-lost mother, Valka, shows up here played by Cate Blanchett, as do Kit Harrington’s Eret and Djimon Hounsou’s Drago. So far, Gerard Butler has been the only member of the original cast to make the trip back to the saga. Back in January he described the hair and makeup process for the film as “five hours of hell.”
While there have been sequels to live action remakes of animated movies before—Alice Through The Looking Glass, 102 Dalmations, and Mufasa all come to mind—it’s hard to think of another remake of the sequel to the original film, at least from the biggest producer of that type of thing, Disney. Perhaps we should begin to plan on the 2029 release of a live-action The Little Mermaid II: Return To The Sea.
