James McAvoy is still cashing checks from Split

The actor said that of all his films, the 2016 M. Night Shyamalan thriller is the one that "consistently pays."

James McAvoy is still cashing checks from Split

James McAvoy is still reaping the benefits of M. Night Shyamalan’s Split years later. “I very rarely see anything from anything. You get the odd check for like a couple hundred quid here or sometimes you get checks for like 25 cents, and you’re like, it literally costs more to post this than it did for me to cash it,” McAvoy said during a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. The actor’s comments came near the end of the conversation, as he named the best film in his filmography (Atonement, in case you were wondering) and said that he’d be interested in both acting and directing, but the former is probably more lucrative. When Horowitz joked that McAvoy must get hefty residuals from Wanted, the 2008 action movie he starred in alongside Angelina Jolie, McAvoy said he actually keeps earning from the 2016 psychological thriller Split, in which he played a man with 23 different personalities who kidnaps three teen girls and imprisons them in an underground lair. “The only one that really consistently pays me is Split,” McAcoy said. “I think it was made for like $6 million or something like that. And let’s say they spent $30 [million] advertising it, and in our first weekend, we made $40 [million]. So, we were in profit. So our first residual check came at the end of the first weekend. It was bonkers.”

Split grossed $278 million globally, and McAvoy reprised his role for the 2019 film Glass. McAvoy’s answer might surprise some, since he starred as Charles Xavier in four X-Men movies and in other films that made a profit. But aside from the continued Split residuals, McAvoy said that his biggest takeaway from working with the “super smart” Shamalan was his preparedness. “He made that film, and Glass, on incredibly modest budgets and was very focused on how he would maximize his day and maximize his shots and maximize what he got out of the studio that day by just being incredibly well-prepared and being able to share that and communicate that with a crew,” the actor said.
