James Wan explains what’s holding up that Aquaman trailer

With Warner Bros.—which has a history of unveiling first looks at its big DC Universe films at the end of March—remaining eerily quiet on the film, rumors have emerged on social media that the release of Ready Player One would bring with it a first trailer for James Wan’s Aquaman. But today, the director took to Twitter to debunk the chatter, saying that there were never plans to release a teaser trailer this past weekend. Up against the waves of negative press around, well, every DCEU film other than Wonder Woman, Wan also attempted to dispel any speculation about why fans have had to wait so long to get a significant glimpse at the underwater hero’s standalone movie. The real reason it’s taking forever? Wan’s own standards, apparently.

Armed with a boatload of marine puns, Wan claimed the movie is packed with visual effects (understandable for a superhero flick where we’ll, presumably, be spending a significant amount of time underwater) and that he doesn’t want to put out a trailer until everything looks just right. “Even shots for the trailers take forever to do, and I refuse to put out anything that might be construed as subpar,” Wan wrote. “I know it seems like nothing much is brewing above the surface, but I can assure you, we’re working nonstop under the waves.”

Outside of his debut in Justice League, all we’ve seen of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman is a few seconds of him swimming around Atlantis and the description of some test footage shown at last year’s Comic-Con. But don’t worry: The movie isn’t set to hit theaters until December 21, 2018, leaving plenty of time for Warner Bros. to roll out the requisite trailers, teaser trailers, and teasers for the teaser trailers.
