Jessie J recently released her first single in four years, “No Secrets,” a track about figuring out her boundaries in the public eye. In that spirit, the singer posted a video to social media on Tuesday disclosing a major health condition. “I want to share it with my fans and the people that care about me, and also I’m a sharer. I’ve always shared everything that I go through in my life,” she said. “Before ‘No Secrets’ came out, I was diagnosed with early breast cancer.”
Jessie, real name Jessica Ellen Cornish, stressed that she was optimistic about her prognosis: “Cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding on to the word early,” she said, adding that she’d been doing a lot of tests and was scheduled for a nipple-sparing mastectomy. “It’s a very dramatic way to get a boob job. I am going to disappear for a bit after [Capital’s] Summertime Ball to have my surgery, and I will come back with massive tits and more music,” she joked.
Jessie J, now the mother of a two-year-old boy, previously revealed to fans in 2021 that she had suffered a pregnancy loss shortly before she was supposed to go on stage, an experience referenced in “No Secrets” (“I lost my baby/But the show must go on, right?”). Now, she says sharing her cancer diagnosis with her fans is a way for her to process, because she doesn’t “talk about it enough” amid “working so hard” to perform and promote her new music. “I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me with other people giving me their love and support and also their own stories,” she said. “It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much similar and worse—that’s the bit that kills me.”
