It may well be the end of the road for Cole Escola in Oh, Mary!, but it’s time for a different alt millennial comic to bring their work to the off-Broadway stage. Julio Torres announced today that he will bring his Color Theories, “a new theatrical spectacle,” to Performance Space New York this September. Described as a blend of stand-up, design, and dream logic, Color Theories will run for 22 performances from September 1 until 22.
“I have some untested theories about colors that I’d like to explain via this multimedia, potentially synesthetic experience,” Torres offered in a press statement. Earlier this month, Torres won a Peabody Award for his HBO series Fantasmas, and will take Color Theories to Melbourne, Paris, and East Hampton before it arrives in New York. The SNL alum previously blended standup and theatrical performance with his 2019 special My Favorite Shapes.
Torres is one of a handful of millennial comedians who seem increasingly interested and successful at staging genre-busting theatrical shows. Beyond Oh, Mary!‘s recent success, Kate Berlant recently staged her one-woman show Kate in New York and Pasadena, and John Early’s Now More Than Ever incorporated live musical performances with a full band. Alex Edelman also won a Tony and an Emmy for his 2024 Broadway show Just For Us.
