Kate Bosworth to star as Sharon Tate in new biopic
Although she was one of the most famous women in the world in the mid-’60s, today Sharon Tate is best remembered for her murder—and that of her unborn child—at the hands of the Manson Family on August 9, 1969. But there’s more to Tate’s life than her death, a point that Kate Bosworth is hoping to make in an upcoming biopic about the fallen star.
The as-yet0untitled film, described as a “look at Tate’s career, marriage and other relationships she had in Hollywood,” was announced earlier this afternoon. It’s based on a book called Sharon Tate And The Manson Murders, although producer Nick Phillips, who worked with Bosworth on the 2011 remake of Straw Dogs, says that the murders won’t be the main focus of the film. “There has been so much said and written about all of the other players in this story, but no one has ever truly done justice to the life of its most tragic player,” he tells Deadline. The Astronaut Farmer and Big Sur director (and Bosworth’s husband) Michael Polish is set to direct.
Earlier this year, Karina Longworth dedicated two episodes of her popular film-history podcast You Must Remember This to Tate, and her romances with Hollywood hairdresser Jay Sebring and her husband, director Roman Polanski. You can listen to those episodes, as well as see more vintage photos of Tate and read about her life and career, here and here.
