Despite his most comic-booky contributions to Eternals occurring in that film’s post-credits sequence, in which Dane Whitman opens a case to reveal the Ebony Blade (the source of his powers and bane of his existence), the Black Knight’s future in the MCU is probably dead on arrival, according to the actor in an interview with Movie Web. When asked if there was interest in further exploring the character, Harington expressed regret.
“I don’t think there’s any plan to [bring Whitman back], I hate to break it to you,” he said, before sharing what made him so interested in playing Black Knight to begin with. “I think he’s a wicked character. There’s a part of him, that whole Ebony Blade stuff, where the more he kills, the worse he gets, the more addicted—I think he’s such a great parable of addiction. I think as someone who ‘starts good, goes bad,’ he’s great. But we’ll see, I don’t know if there’s any plan.” Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige told Inverse there were “no immediate plans” for an Eternals sequel in 2024.
Between his evaporated prospects in the MCU and the scrapped Jon Snow Game Of Thrones sequel series, Harington’s franchise options have narrowed of late. Most recently, the actor has taken the role of Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter reboot series, after Nicholas Hoult snapped out of a fugue state brought on by his comic-book movie efforts as the villain Lex Luthor. Whether Harington’s fellow post-credits-scene partner, Mahershala Ali’s Blade, could be heard saying “join the club, bub” couldn’t be confirmed.
