So, Lanterns is doing well

After its latest big-screen offering crashed out at this summer’s box office, DC Studios could sure use a hit—and it looks like it’s got one in Lanterns. The eight-episode series, starring Kyle Chandler as Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as the heir to Hal’s conjuring ring, John Stewart, racked up 9.3 million viewers in the first three days since the show’s HBO/HBO Max premiere on Sunday night.

Variety reports that his viewer haul is impressive by any series metric, with the genre-blending superhero/mystery series holding the distinction of being the biggest premiere for a DC Studios show “to date,” beating out its live-action counterparts, Peacemaker season two and The Penguin. (We must assume that the pretty good adult-animated series that launched this new DC Universe, Creature Commandos, need not enter this conversation.) Some Penguin-powered perspective on Lanterns‘ initial splash: The 2024 premiere of the Colin Farrell-led crime saga snagged 10.4 million viewers across all platforms in 11 days after debuting at a then-impressive 5.3 million viewers, which puts Lanterns comfortably in hit status.

And if Lanterns‘ momentum continues, an Oa-like green light for season two could be in the offing. Series co-creator Chris Mundy (True Detective) said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he’s already in the planning stages for a follow-up season with Halt And Catch Fire co-creator and comics writer Christopher Cantwell should the stars align for Lanterns. (Current co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom King are busy with other projects.) “We feel good that we told the story in season one well,” Mundy said. “The question is whether [season two] is a story people are interested in. If that’s the case, then we’ll get to do another one. We’ll tell it in a slightly different way, so that it feels fresh, with characters you know and care about.”

Between these solid numbers and Chandler’s throwaway line in Lanterns promos about one of the Green Lantern Corps members being a “fucking squirrel,” we’re this much closer to seeing unjustly ridiculed Green Lantern Ch’p in live action someday. (Also, Ch’p is a chipmunk, Hal, don’t be ridiculous.)
