Mariah Carey is turning her biggest holiday hit into an animated film
Its 20-year run of making precious, stressful memories as the most popular holiday song to play at the mall may have ended last year, but Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is still a contemporary classic. And because it’s never the wrong time of year to put a little residual Christmas cheer into Carey’s pockets, The Hollywood Reporter has a story detailing an upcoming feature-length CGI animated movie based on the 1994 hit.
The lyrics of the song are mostly about what Carey won’t do until she gets some of that sweet Yuletide lovin’—she won’t hang her stocking, nor wish for snow, nor make a list and send it off to the North Pole—begging the question of how, exactly, to stretch that simple sentiment into a 90-minute story. The answer is that a young Mariah’s covetous desires will be turned not to a snowbound lover, but to an adorable puppy, which she sees at the beginning of the story and decides she must have for her own. But first, she’s got to prove that she can handle the responsibility by petsitting a little rascal named Jack, who throws Mariah’s Christmas celebration into chaos.
We all know that the real Mariah Carey would just hire a dog nanny—she doesn’t even walk from room to room if she can help it—but let’s just pretend for the sake of the story. Basically, the film will expand upon the 2015 children’s book also named after Carey’s Christmas hit, hopefully with the addition of some jokes about Mariah hitting high notes that only dogs can hear.
All I Want For Christmas Is You features a voice cast that includes Henry Winkler, Lacey Chabert, Breanna Yde, Phil Morris, Laya Hayes, Keiko Agena, and Carey as the narrator, and is expected to be completed in time for the holidays this year.
