3 new songs and 3 new albums to listen to this weekend

Welcome to our weekly music post, where we spotlight our favorite new songs and albums. Hop in the comments and tell us: What new music are you listening to?

“Running Errands (Yesterday),” U.S. Girls

Meg Remy, the Toronto-based singer-songwriter behind experimental pop outfit U.S. Girls, took on a big project with her latest release, Running Errands. The two-song EP aims to capture a decade of Remy’s lengthy career, from breakout 2015 hit Half Free to her most recent album, Scratch It. “Running Errands (Yesterday)” builds its funky, mercurial beat from multiple samples in the style of the 2015 album, while “Running Errands (Today)” has a jazzier, more free-wheeling feel reminiscent of Scratch It. You can’t go wrong with either component of this “musical ouroboros experiment,” as Remy put it in a press statement, but we’re slightly partial to “Yesterday.” [Emma Keates]

“Keep On,” Lettuce

In a press release for “Keep On,” Boston band Lettuce call the track their tribute to Tower Of Power. It’s safe to say the band did their homework. “Keep On” matches the Oakland group’s kinetic energy with restless bassline and horn stabs to complement its “Keep on moving” chorus. Their album, Cook, is out on December 3. [Drew Gillis]

“head, shoulders, knees, and ankles,” hemlocke springs

There aren’t a ton of musicians who blow up on TikTok and go on to demonstrate some real staying power, but hemlocke springs is one of them. After releasing the EP going…going…GONE! in 2023, the artist announced her debut album the apple tree under the sea along with new track “head, shoulders, knees, and ankles” this week. The track is an appropriately spooky offering for a late October release, blending new wave synths and cartoonish vocals before transitioning into a dramatic, piano-built outro. It’s all very gothic. the apple tree under the sea arrives on February 13. [DG]

West End Girl, Lily Allen

For a moment, it seemed like a new Lily Allen album would be only a dream, but within the past week, it quickly became a reality. Last week, Allen revealed she’d been in the studio and on Monday, she said the album would be out today. While the artist didn’t share too much ahead of its release (other than she wrote its contents over 16 days as her marriage to David Harbour fell apart), West End Girl marks Allen’s first full-length project since 2018’s No Shame. Returning To Myself, Brandi Carlisle

Brandi Carlile’s first solo LP in four years is finally here. Originally announced in early September (along with its stunning, introspective title track), Returning To Myself was a lesson for Carlile in solitude, which she said in a press release she previously found “painfully boring.” Despite the record’s focus on coming to terms with being alone, Carlile did get a little help from her friends. The record was created in collaboration with Andrew Watt, Aaron Dessner (of The National), and Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver), with contributions from a wide range of artists including Rob Moose, Blake Mills, Chad Smith, SistaStrings, and more. Advance singles “A War With Time” and “Church & State” may be about loneliness, but listening to them feels like reuniting with an old friend. [EK]

We Were Just Here, Just Mustard

We Were Just Here, the third album from Irish rock band Just Mustard, has an ethereal quality. This is thanks in no small part to Katie Ball’s vocals, which at times almost recall the Cocteau Twins. The album pulls from shoegaze and industrial sounds, and advanced singles like “Endless Deathless” and the title track have sounded novel, modern, and urgent. [DG]
