Arguably much better known for their innovative music videos than for any of the songs they’ve recorded, the Chicago-born rock quartet OK Go apparently determined that they needed to slip the surly bonds of Earth for their latest clip. They’d already famously employed treadmills, Rube Goldberg-type devices, and even Muppets in their dauntless and, thus far, wildly successful quest for viral views. But 2016 requires a fresh, new approach, so OK Go have decided to bypass gravity altogether in the video for the high-energy “Upside Down & Inside Out.” Already anticipating viewer skepticism, the clip starts out with this stark message: “What you are about to see is real. We shot this in zero gravity, in an actual plane, in the sky. There are no wires or green screen.” Instead of those tricks, the free-floating antics on display here were made possible through Russia’s very real S7 Airlines.
In the clip, the four, color-coded members of OK Go portray four passengers on what initially appears to be a small private plane. Maybe they’re on their way to the Kids Choice Awards. One never knows. But soon enough, the guys are bouncing all around the cabin, and there are airborne flight attendants, flying piñatas, and balloons everywhere. It’s carefully planned, meticulously choreographed pandemonium. Apparently, when the guys from OK Go travel, all they take in their carry-on suitcases is an assortment of colorful spheres. Really, what else are you going to need during a flight?
