Disney+ has already renewed Percy Jackson And The Olympians for a third season

The gods continue to smile on Disney+’s adaptation of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books. Percy Jackson And The Olympians, the streamer’s TV take on the series, hasn’t just gotten renewed for a third season: It’s scored that renewal several months before the show’s second season had even had a chance to premiere, suggesting a pretty massive vote of confidence from those who judge mere mortals from way on-high. (I.e., Disney CEO Bob Iger.)

To be fair, the show does have a ton of Percy left to adapt: The upcoming second season will serve as a version of Riordan’s 2006 novel The Sea Of Monsters (previously adapted with a poorly received movie in 2013), while this just-announced third season will tackle The Titan’s Curse. Counting spin-offs and side stories, Riordan has written 18 novels set in his world of demigods and other mythological folk, so we could be at this thing for a while.

Riordan, certainly, seems a hell of a lot happier with this adaptation of his work than the previous film series, which he’s said he’s never seen, after having been “plunged into despair” by the scripts. He co-wrote several episodes of the show’s well-received first season, and issued a statement today thanking Disney for extending the series. “We’re so grateful to be continuing the story of Percy Jackson on Disney+. This third season will be new territory for the screen, bringing fan favorites like the Hunters of Artemis and Nico di Angelo to life for the first time. It’s a huge sign of commitment from Disney, and speaks volumes about the enthusiasm with which the fandom has embraced the TV show. Thank you, demigods worldwide!”

The series centers on the titular Percy Jackson, played by Walker Scobell, who discovers that he’s the son of Poseidon right around the time a bunch of mythological creatures start showing up and trying to kill him, forcing him to escape to a summer camp populated by the children of the Greek gods. The series did well with both audiences and critics when it landed on the streamer back in December 2023, with our own review praising it for sticking much better to the spirit of the books than the earlier films. The new season is set to arrive on Disney+ this December, having recently wrapped filming in Vancouver.
