Roger Daltry, the 81-year-old frontman of The Who, told a crowd at London’s Royal Albert Hall last night that he was going blind. Per The Sun, The Who were performing their 25th annual Teenage Cancer Trust charity show when Daltrey revealed that he was losing his sight. In 2018, Daltrey announced he was “very, very deaf.”

“The joys of getting old mean you go deaf. I also now have got the joy of going blind,” Daltrey said. “Fortunately, I still have my voice because then I’ll have a full Tommy.”

A “full Tommy” refers to the “deaf, dumb, and blind” pinball wizard at the center of The Who’s rock opera. As of now, he’s only two-thirds of the way there. Daltrey’s announcement comes six years after the rocker made his ongoing hearing issues public. In 2018, he told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he was “very, very deaf” and reads lips and uses monitors for each ear on stage to keep up with the music.

“The trouble with these ear things that I wear is that I am very, very deaf. And I advise you all—all you rock-and-roll fans—take your fucking earplugs to the gigs,” he said on stage in 2018. “If only we had known when we were young … we are lip-reading.”

He’s not the only member of 1976’s loudest band in the world with hearing issues. In a 2011 interview, Daltrey said that Pete Townsend was “almost stone deaf. He deafened himself in the recording studio, and when we last performed, he had to stand right next to the speakers to hear anything.”

However, at the show this weekend, the only ailment Townsend discussed was his knee replacement. “Maybe I should auction off the old one. Elton John had one done, and he wears his as a bracelet,” he said. “Unfortunately, mine’s in three bits.”
