Rosie O’Donnell has recently appeared in two Max shows: earlier this month for an episode of Hacks, and last night’s And Just Like That… season premiere. You might think this is the start of a nice string of sitcom guest appearances, but if it is, it probably won’t be on any series filmed in the United States. O’Donnell was one of the celebrities who did actually leave the country when Donald Trump was re-elected in November, apparently after already filming her recent guest spots. It’s going to take more than an episode of Poker Face to bring her back.

“I was supposed to do, right before I left, an episode of Poker Face,” O’Donnell tells Variety in a new interview. “I’m hoping that I’ll be able to do that, although I don’t know — with the current political climate, when would it be safe to come back with my child? I’m not going to push it before this administration is completely finished, and hopefully held accountable for their crimes.”

Much of the rest of the interview unpacks O’Donnell’s decision to leave for Ireland, a decision she says she has “[n]ever, for one moment” regretted. “People have been so welcoming, so accepting, and they have a different view of celebrity in the culture here. They are not prioritized over other people,” O’Donnell reflects. “People are much more friendly and intimate with each other in a real way. Every time I go into the pharmacy, I fall in love, because the pharmacist talks to you.” As nice as Natasha Lyonne and Rian Johnson might be, that does sound pretty hard to beat.
