Ryan Murphy developing secret horror series at FX

Before he set out to save arts education and redefine pop music with Glee, Ryan Murphy made his name telling simple stories of incestuous, penis-less slashers on FX’s Nip/Tuck. Now it looks as though Murphy is more or less returning to those roots: He’s and Brad Falchuk—also of both Glee and Nip/Tuck—are headed back to FX with a new pilot called American Horror Story, which could debut on the network as early as this fall. And as of now, that’s all anyone is saying: The press release contains a few quotes from Falchuk about how he and Murphy plan to “bring the horror genre to television but with our own subversive sensibilities,” which is something you probably already gleaned from the title, while FX president John Landgraf would only say that it is a “wildly brilliant original series” and that Murphy and Falchuk are “evil geniuses.” You can probably expect more details to leak soon, but let’s just enjoy this rare moment of blissful ignorance and use it to speculate wildly about what American Horror Story might be about. We’re going to say radon, the silent killer.
