Sarah Sherman feels really bad that Aimee Lou Wood didn't like SNL's White Lotus sketch

Walton Goggins may have been able to avoid discussing whatever the hell is going on between him and his White Lotus co-star Aimee Lou Wood on Saturday Night Live this weekend, but the rest of the cast may not be so lucky. In a new interview with cast member Sarah Sherman published this morning in Vanity Fair, her portrayal of Wood’s character Chelsea in a Trump-focused White Lotus parody was seemingly among the very first things discussed. Last month, Wood called the sketch “mean and unfunny,” which Sherman seems genuinely remorseful about.

“I was excited to play her because she’s so iconic, her character is so iconic, and I fucking obviously never meant to hurt anyone’s feelings,” Sherman says in the interview. “Never in a million years did I get into comedy to make anyone upset. I feel terrible that anyone would feel bad.”

The question does work as a pretty natural launching point to discuss some of the tensions in Sherman’s career. Sherman is undeniably one of the edgier, more out-there cast members on a show that is famously meant to appeal to almost every demographic in all 50 U.S. states. “The show is in constant dialogue with culture as it’s happening, and it happens really fast,” Sherman says. “You have to be vigilant, you know what I mean? There are a lot of things out of your control. You’re playing a lot of different parts, you’re doing a lot of different roles that you’re not in control of. A lot of the process of the show has been, to me—how am I answering this?” She adds, “Being in conversation with everything popular culture, there’s such a danger there. Sometimes you just don’t realize how it comes across, but you’re put in a position to be engaging with it all the time, because you are a part of a show that’s constantly interacting with culture and popular politics and popular whatever. As I get thrown more and more into the show, it’s just this other thing that I have to learn about.” And for what it’s worth, Sherman did send Wood flowers after her impression, which Wood graciously accepted on Instagram. This hatchet has been buried!
