Author of fake ransom note arrested in connection with Savannah Guthrie's missing mother

During a press conference regarding the disappearance of Today host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, the FBI announced the arrest of the author of a phony ransom note demanding millions in cryptocurrency in exchange for her return. Earlier today, the Pima County, Arizona, Sheriff’s Department announced no new leads in the investigation into the disappearance of Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother, who has been missing since January 31, when she was last seen at her Phoenix, AZ, home. Still, the FBI said it had received ransom demands from “impostors,” including one reported by TMZ earlier this week. One such impostor has been arrested. “To those impostors who are trying to take advantage and profit from this situation, we will investigate and ensure you are held accountable for your actions,” said FBI special agent Heith Janke. “We have made one arrest related to an impostor ransom demand, and a complaint will be presented to a magistrate judge later today.”

Earlier this week, TMZ reportedly received a ransom note for Guthrie’s return in exchange for millions in Bitcoin from someone claiming to be the kidnapper. Whether or not she was kidnapped, however, is unclear, but police are taking all potential leads seriously. Nancy Guthrie has not been seen since late January, when she was reported missing after she missed her regular Sunday church services. On Wednesday evening, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings, Annie and Camro, posted a video on Instagram responding to the kidnapping reports and begging for their mother’s return.

“Our mom is heart and our home. She’s 84 years old. Her health, her heart, is fragile. She lives in constant pain. She is without any medicine. She needs it to survive, and she needs it not to suffer,” Guthrie says in the video. “We, too, have heard the reports about a ransom letter in the media. As a family, we are doing everything that we can. We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen.”

Guthrie has since suspended her NBC duties, including co-hosting the Winter Olympics, while she searches for her mother.
